Help for Parents of Troubled Teens

As a parent of a daughter who went from a relatively good kid to becoming a Meth addict in 90 days, I can sympathize with any parent who has a child abusing drugs or alcohol.
The $64000.00 question is, how and where do you get help? This is why we developed the National Youth Network so parents can find resources and options for their troubled teen boy or girl. For us, we sent our daughter to a wilderness therapy program in Idaho, which worked extremely well for our addicted daughter as well as everyone else in the family. After spending about 6 weeks in wilderness therapy we admitted our daughter into a residential treatment center for teens in Utah where she stayed for 6 more months. Both programs were very effective for our daughter and for all members of our family. The reason why it was effective was because of the education we received as parents to do a better job at communicating, listening and parenting skill building. It amazes me that parents want their kids "fixed" but fail to realize that they, the parents, are at least 50% of the issue...maybe 100%.If you have a child that is struggling with behavioral issues, addiction, learning disabilities or a variety of other issues, consider the following suggestions: 1. Take parenting courses or parenting classes either online or in your community (both parents)2 Seek the help of a family or adolescent therapist or counselor.3 Contact an Educational Consultant for assistance.4 Browse the National Youth Network for assistance and information.5. Contact and interview 1 or more program listed on the National Youth Network to determine an appropriate fit for your child and your family. We have found that most schools and school districts won't discuss treatment options and alternative education with you for fear of lawsuit. Try #1 above first if your aren't in crisis mode. I wish you and your child the best. By the way, our daughter, who went through the addiction is and has been clean and sober for years and Graduated from Cal State Fullerton last week. She is continuing on to obtain her teaching credential and wants to be an elementary school teacher. All the best.Bill

I appreciate you sharing your inspiring story and recommendations. It is clear that your daughter has terrific parents who have put forth a great deal of effort. I hope that all us parents will follow your example and enjoy the outcome you have.

So many resources and services are available in the country that provides all relevant information about several types of rehab programs working in the country for troubled teenagers. But is also noticed that not all types of programs are useful for teenagers to gain complete recovery so be aware about the effective services.
